scholasticism with philosophy, especially that of Leibnitz.6 The Enlightenment eventually effected a transition “from a new scholasticism to a new religion” through a series of “transitional” theologians and “innovating” theologians.7 The Enlightenment affected Christianity by exalting the complete autonomy of human reason, making man totally free intellectually.8 Man was not to be bound by church creeds, theological statements, revelation, or any particular world view or presuppositions of any kind.
